Inclusive Futures Foundation (IFF) hosted a session on ‘Dignified Menstrual Hygiene’ at Nepal Model School, Basundhara, took place on September 2, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Nepal Model School in Kathmandu.

The event aimed to raise awareness among female students from grades 6 to 10 about menstrual hygiene and its importance for their well-being. Dignified menstruation refers to managing menstruation in a way that respects individuals’ dignity and rights, involving accurate information, access to products, and an environment free from shame and stigma.

Objectives included educating students about menstrual health, providing resources, and promoting social support to ensure safe and comfortable menstrual management. The event challenged negative cultural norms and encouraged respectful attitudes toward menstruation.

To educate young girls about menstruation, hygiene, and dignity, Nepal Model School hosted a workshop with Ms. Sharmila Maharjan, the event manager. The principal, Mr. Dilli Ram Dhungel, welcomed the participants and introduced the school’s commitment to student well-being. Dr. Juhi Gupta, the President of the Inclusive Futures Foundation, emphasized its mission to empower young girls through education and awareness programs on health and hygiene. Dr. Zenisha Rajbhandari, an MBBS from Sylhet Women’s Medical College, discussed the physiology of menstruation, helping students understand their biology. Ms. Sheela Sharma, a community nutritionist, discussed the importance of proper menstrual practices and respect for individuals during their menstrual cycles.

Dr. Zenisha and Ms. Sheela then engaged students in a quiz, rewarding winners with exciting gifts, and answered students’ questions, before three students summarized key takeaways from the presentations and discussions. Dr. Juhi Gupta and the school’s vice-principal thanked everyone involved for their effort.

The event raised awareness about menstrual hygiene among students. Out of 130 participants, 23 had not experienced menstruation, while the rest had varying curiosities and experiences. The program provided essential knowledge for the girls’ futures. The collaboration between IFF and Nepal Model School exemplified how schools and organizations can address critical health issues.
